The world is turning pink on the eve of the new Greta Gerwig Barbie movie! But, if you've been paying attention, you'll have noticed the Barbiecore trend rising through the ranks for the last year.
Google Trends, Pinterest and Social Media platforms have shown a marked increase in the number of searches for Barbiecore-related content. Barbie really is having her renaissance, with the pink powerhouse affecting clothing and interior design trends, too. In fact, Pantone's colour of the year for 2023 - shade 18-1750, Viva Magenta, is a hot pink that lands us squarely in Barbie territory. And it's not hard to see why.
What is Barbiecore for Home Design?
Barbiecore is led by hot and neon pinks, with splashes of bold, bright colours seen in Barbie house toys over the years. It's a fun, kitsch and playful style that emphasises a tactile look. Lots of smooth, glossy surfaces. It's a bit retro, with its 90s plastic feel, but that doesn't mean it has to be uncomfortable in real life. Velvet, leather and other soft fabrics all have a place in a Barbiecore home. It doesn't all have to be pink, either! You can incorporate a few fun bubblegum pieces to nod to the style without needing to dive headlong into it. But, if you want a home dripping head-to-toe in Barbie aesthetic, we are here for it!

The arrival of the new Greta Gerwig movie taps into the zeitgeist of the moment. It captures a longing for nostalgia (that we're also seeing manifesting in a modern 70s revival). It's also fun, bright, and empowering, which is a shift away from the stark all-white interiors that dominated pre-lockdowns. People want to inject a bit of fun into their lives and Barbie is a symbol of all that. Architectural Digest even featured the Barbie movie interiors, cementing the Barbiecore look as stylish and desirable.
