Choosing Garden Chairs for Your Space
Not all outdoor seating asks the same thing of a chair. If most of your time outside revolves around casual socialising, an accent chair or two with a side table keeps things simple, but comfortable. If you have a spot in your garden you love, an outdoor bench can encourage you to spend more time there.
For afternoons spent reading or catching the sun, loungers, deck chairs and garden rocking chairs offer deeper seats so you stay comfortable for longer. These sit lower to the ground and work well alongside a garden sofa or as a standalone spot on a patio.
If your outdoor area has to serve both purposes, bistro-style chairs are a practical middle ground. They're compact enough for a small table, but comfortable enough to linger in after the plates are cleared.
Pairing Garden Dining Chairs with Tables
When matching chairs to a table, the key measurement is the gap between the seat top and the tabletop. Around 28–30 cm works for most people. Each product listing includes seat height, so it’s easy to check before you buy, though if you’re unsure, our friendly team will be happy to advise.
Sticking within the same material family can boost the overall look of your garden dining set. Rattan chairs with a rattan table, for example, or metal with metal. That said, mixing materials can work well if the colour palette is consistent. For instance, a set of black metal chairs around a dark wooden table holds together visually.
Garden Chairs FAQs
Are Garden Chairs Sold Individually or in Sets?
It depends on the product. Some of our garden chairs are sold individually, others come in pairs, and some are available as part of a wider dining set. The product title and listing will always make this clear, so check the quantity before adding to your basket.
Do Your Garden Chairs Come with Cushions?
Some do. Most of our cushioned garden chairs include removable pads that can be brought indoors after use, keeping them clean and extending their life. If you prefer a firmer seat, we also carry uncushioned chairs with contoured seats that are comfortable without any padding.
How Many Chairs Fit Around a Standard Garden Table?
As a rough guide, a square table around 90 cm wide seats four comfortably, while a rectangular table at 150 cm or longer works well with six. Allow roughly 60 cm of table edge per chair so everyone has enough elbow room. Our dining set pages include recommended chair counts for each table size.
Can I Leave Garden Chairs Outside All Year?
Our garden chairs are rated for outdoor use, but longevity improves if you store them over winter or cover them during prolonged bad weather. Metal and rattan-effect frames handle rain well; wooden chairs benefit from an annual re-treatment. Cushions should always be brought inside when not in use to avoid moisture build-up.
Do Garden Chairs Require Assembly?
Most do. Assembly is usually straightforward and each order includes illustrated instructions. A typical chair takes around 10–20 minutes. If you’d rather not build them yourself, our TaskRabbit assembly service can take care of it.
