Choosing Your 4-Seater Garden Table and Chairs

At four seats, table shape is less about capacity and more about how the set fits in your space. A square 4-seater garden table and chairs set tucks neatly into a corner or against a wall, with one chair per side. That makes it a natural fit for a rectangular patio or a decked area that runs along the back of the house.

A round table takes up roughly the same footprint, but because it has no corners, it’s easier to walk around in tighter spots. If your garden path runs close to the dining area, or if children are darting about, rounded edges are more forgiving. Round tables also tend to feel more sociable with four seats. Everyone faces the centre, so there’s no “head of the table” to navigate.

Either shape works well at this size. The deciding factor is usually the space around the table rather than the table itself. Measure the area, add at least 60 cm on each side for chairs to pull back, and whichever shape still fits comfortably is the right one.

Making a Garden Dining Set for 4 Work in a Smaller Space

A garden dining set for 4 is the most common size for smaller gardens, terraces, and balconies, but “fits four people” and “fits your patio” aren’t always the same thing. Paying attention to a few design features can help tighten the footprint without losing seats.

Folding sets collapse flat when you’re done eating, handing the entire floor area back to you. They’re particularly useful on shared balconies or in gardens where the dining spot doubles as a play area during the day. Stackable chairs do a similar job: the table stays put, but the chairs stack into a single column against a wall or inside a shed.

Armless chairs also save width. At four seats around a 90 cm table, dropping the arms on each chair can reclaim 10–15 cm of total spread, which on a narrow patio is the difference between comfortable and cramped. If you still want armrests, make sure you measure for them rather than assuming a 4-seater garden table and chairs set will fit by default.

4-Seater Garden Dining Set FAQs

How Much Patio Space Does a Garden Furniture Table and 4 Chairs Need?

As a guide, allow roughly 2.5 m × 2.5 m for a square or round four-seat set. That includes about 60–70 cm around each side for pulling chairs out. If your space is tighter than that, a folding set that packs away after meals is a good workaround.

Can I Upgrade to More Seats Later?

If you outgrow four seats, our 6-seat garden dining sets are a natural step up. Our garden chairs typically don't match any of the chairs sold with our dining sets. If you decide to mix styles, always check the height of all the seats to ensure they are the same.

Will a 4-Seat Set Work on Grass?

Yes, though performance depends on the leg design. Wide, flat feet distribute weight well on lawn. Narrow legs can sink into soft or damp ground over time, so on grass it’s worth favouring sets with broader bases or placing the legs on flat paving slabs.

Do the Tables Include a Parasol Hole?

Many of our 4-seater garden table and chair sets don't include a centre parasol hole with a removable cap. We do stock cantilevered garden parasols that are perfect for pairing with tables that don't have parasol holes.

How Long Does Assembly Take for a 4-Seat Set?

Most 4-seater garden table and chairs take around 30–45 minutes with the included step-by-step guide. Folding sets are often quicker since they arrive largely pre-assembled. If you have any issues or questions, our friendly customer service team will be happy to help.

What if the Set Is Too Big or Too Small Once It Arrives?

Most products come with free 30-day returns, so if the proportions don’t work in your space, you can send the set back in its original packaging at no cost. We also deliver free next-day delivery on orders placed before 8 pm on weekdays to mainland UK addresses. See our delivery page for the full terms.
