The Most Stylish Place To Live in the UK (2024)
Last year, we published our list of the Top 20 most stylish places in the UK. So this year, we're back at it, expanding our list and ranking criteria to include 60 locations. Design is our 'thing' and we love seeing how regular folks turn their houses into dream homes full of stylish furniture. But bigger spaces and communities intrigue us too. What makes a village, a town or a city a stylish place to live?
'Style' is about aesthetics, or how things look and feel; a pleasing appearance creating a sense of effortless harmony. Stylish places are the places people want to visit or to live. Filmmakers, artists, tourists and residents want to share these places because they just look so good. But, as we learnt last year, 'style' is a point of personal taste. So, we created a poll to ask the people of the UK to vote for the most stylish places.
Methodology - How We Ranked the Most Stylish Places
We surveyed 5,000 UK residents. Our survey panels were set up across the UK and respondents were asked to rank locations according to:
- the beauty of the buildings;
- the stunning scenery;
- how "Instagrammable" the location is; and
- their popularity with artists and filmmakers
So which UK location topped the ranks this year? Drum rolls, please...
Grassington, North Yorkshire, Voted Most Stylish UK Location In 2024
Grassington in North Yorkshire is the most stylish place to live in the UK. It's been the setting for Darrowby in 'All Creatures Great and Small' for 5 seasons of the show. But, more than a great TV location, it's a thriving community full of independent shops and fantastic places to dine.
Skeldale House, where James Herriot, Siegfried and Tristan live and run their veterinary practice, is located in the village. James Herriot - real name Alf Wight - was a real Scottish vet who practised in Thirsk for nearly 50 years. He based his books on real-life characters. Thirsk itself has changed a lot since the 1930s and '40s, when Wight’s books were set, so filmmakers opted for Grassington as the main stand-in.

Grassington is top, but what about the rest? Here's our breakdown of the top 20 (the full 60 locations are provided below).
Bourton-on-the-water in Gloucestershire is second. Dubbed 'Venice of the Cotswolds' due to the five stone bridges which cross the Windrush river, it's a tourism hotspot. The idyllic village is famed for its honey-coloured stone buildings and was a filming location for the James Bond movie Die Another Day in 2002, which stared Pierce Brosnan.
Deal in Kent was third, Arundel in West Sussex was fourth and Turville in Buckinghamshire was fifth.

Our Thoughts On The Results
All 60 places on the list would have been worthy winners and they show why the UK is such a stylish country, loved by artists, filmmakers and tourists from all over the world. We found it really interesting to see how influential Instagram has become in boosting tourism in many of our top 60. It is a massive help for visitor numbers too, if a popular film or TV show uses a town as a location. Most of the locations in the top 60 are not the most affluent or fashionable in their counties. The results show that style can be achieved regardless of budget, and that's something we champion at Furniturebox, too!
